Neil Howsam is an architect with more than twenty years of experience designing and delivering complex projects across commercial, cultural, residential and mixed-use sectors. His work spans architecture, interior design, masterplanning and public realm, with particular experience in the transformation, repositioning and renewal of existing buildings.
Neil started his career at Patel Taylor, working on some of their highest profile projects, including White City Living and Courtyard Housing, Barking. Before establishing Howsam Design, Neil spent eleven years at Piercy&Company, where he became a Director and helped lead the architectural studio. Project highlights include the redevelopment of Camden Lock Market, The Residences at Paddington Green, The Forge for Landsec, The Jellicoe for Related Argent, 80 Pelham Street for The Wellcome Trust, New Victoria in Manchester and 20 Dering Street, Mayfair. His role combined design leadership with responsibility for developing client relationships, managing project teams, commercial performance and the delivery of major commissions. He has worked from strategic briefing and early design through planning, technical design and construction, maintaining continuity between the original architectural proposition and its eventual realisation. He has particular experience in high-density new build residential development and both new-build and deep retrofits within the prime commercial workplace sector.
Neil has extensive experience navigating complex planning and heritage environments in London and across the UK. He has delivered projects requiring a deep understanding of the technical, environmental and infrastructural considerations that shape development and support successful planning outcomes. He has led multidisciplinary teams through design development, planning and delivery, working closely with clients, consultants, statutory authorities and stakeholders to resolve competing constraints, whilst maintaining the architectural integrity and development objectives. This combination of design leadership and delivery experience allows him to engage with both the strategic questions that establish value and the detailed decisions through which that value is ultimately realised.
His approach combines design judgement with a strong understanding of the commercial and environmental forces that shape development. He is particularly interested in the value created by thoughtful adaptation, long-life design and the careful calibration of architecture across the scales of city, street, space and object.
Neil has been an invited critic at The University of Sheffield, where he studied, as well as The University of Greenwich. He is actively engaged in the property community, contributing to pieces in the architectural press, including the RIBA Journal, and regularly attending events held by the WPA, CPA and BCO.
Through Howsam Design, Neil brings his experience to a responsive studio model focused on design quality, intellectual rigour and the creation of enduring economic, social and architectural value.
